Attic Insulation in Calgary: Stop Heat Loss, and Prevent Attic Rain

Your attic is one of the most important and most overlooked parts of your home. If your insulation is inadequate, missing, or damaged, you are paying to heat air that escapes through your roof every single winter. Worse, that warm air meeting Calgary’s cold roof deck creates condensation – a problem called attic rain – that causes mold, structural rot, and ice dams. We assess, remove, and install attic insulation systems that solve these problems at the source.

Attic Insulation Problems in Calgary Homes Are More Common Than Most Homeowners Realize

Calgary has one of the most demanding climates for building envelopes in Canada. Temperature swings of 30 degrees in a single day are not unusual. Winters that drop to minus 30 stress every component of your home’s thermal boundary, and your attic sits right at the intersection of the warm air inside your home and the cold roof structure above it.

When your attic insulation is inadequate – whether it was installed incorrectly, has compressed over time, or was simply never sufficient to begin with – several things happen simultaneously. Your furnace works harder and your heating bills climb. Warm humid air from your living space migrates into the attic and condenses on the cold roof decking, creating the moisture environment that leads to mold, rot, and eventually structural damage. In winter, that heat loss also causes the snow on your roof to melt unevenly, creating ice dams at your eaves that force water under your shingles.

According to Natural Resources Canada, improving attic insulation is consistently rated as one of the highest-return energy upgrades available to Canadian homeowners. The payback period in a Calgary climate is typically three to five years through reduced heating costs alone.

If you are experiencing any roof issues at the same time, it is worth noting that many roof leaks blamed on shingles are actually attic moisture problems. Our roof repair team at luminahomes.ca/service/roof-repair-maintenance/ can help determine which is which.

What You Get With Lumina Attic Insulation Installation

Full Assessment Before Any Recommendation

We inspect your attic thoroughly before recommending anything. We check your current R-value, look for air gaps and bypasses where warm air is escaping, assess your ventilation system, and identify any existing moisture damage that needs to be addressed first. You get a written report of what we found before we quote any work.

Proper Air Sealing First

Insulation without air sealing is significantly less effective. Warm air bypasses small gaps around pot lights, plumbing stacks, attic hatches, and wiring penetrations before the insulation even has a chance to work. We seal these bypasses first so your insulation performs as designed.

Blown-In Insulation That Reaches Every Gap

We install blown-in fiberglass or cellulose insulation that fills every corner, covers every joist bay, and reaches a consistent depth across the entire attic floor. Unlike batt insulation that leaves gaps and bridges at every joist, blown-in provides uniform coverage that meets and exceeds Alberta Energy Code requirements.

Ventilation That Protects Your Roof

Insulation and ventilation work together. Blocking soffit vents with insulation eliminates the airflow that keeps your roof deck cold and dry in winter. We install baffles at every eave to maintain the ventilation channel regardless of how much insulation sits above it.

Alberta Energy Code Compliant Installation

All insulation we install meets the requirements set under the Alberta Building Code. Calgary homes typically require a minimum R-50 attic insulation value, and we document the completed R-value for your records.

Existing Insulation Removal When Required

Old, wet, compressed, or contaminated insulation cannot simply be covered with new material. When your existing insulation has moisture damage, pest contamination, or is the wrong type for your attic configuration, we remove it completely before installing the new system.

We Stand Behind Our Work Post-storm, Calgary sees a surge of out-of-town contractors making promises they don’t keep. We’re a local, BBB A+ accredited business with 126 reviews and a 4.9★ rating. We live and work here too; and we’ll be here after the job is done.

Our Attic Insulation Services in Calgary

For homes experiencing condensation, frost, or moisture damage in the attic, we diagnose the specific cause, whether it is inadequate insulation, blocked ventilation, air bypasses, or a combination, and implement the correct fix. See our prevention guide for more background.

Attic Insulation Assessment

A thorough inspection of your current attic insulation system including R-value measurement, ventilation assessment, air sealing audit, and moisture check. You receive a written report with specific findings and recommendations.

Blown-In Attic Insulation

Installation of blown-in fiberglass or cellulose insulation to achieve the target R-value for your home and Calgary's climate zone. Includes air sealing of all bypasses and installation of ventilation baffles at eaves.

Attic Insulation Top-Up

If your existing insulation is in good condition but insufficient depth, we top it up to current code standards without full removal. This is often the most cost-effective upgrade for homes built before current energy codes.

Full Insulation Removal and Replacement

When existing insulation is wet, moldy, contaminated by pests, or simply past its useful life, we remove it completely using proper containment and disposal, seal the attic floor, and install a new blown-in system from scratch.

Air Sealing

Standalone air sealing service to address bypasses around pot lights, plumbing, wiring, attic hatches, and partition walls. Can be performed independently or as part of a broader insulation upgrade.

Ventilation Correction

If your attic has inadequate soffit, ridge, or box vents, we address the ventilation system as part of insulation work to ensure the two components function correctly together.

Signs Your Calgary Home Needs Attic Insulation Attention

Inside the Attic

Insulation that sits below the top of your floor joists is almost certainly below current code requirements. Frost on the underside of your roof deck in winter is a direct sign of inadequate insulation and ventilation. Dark staining on rafters or decking indicates recurring moisture. Any visible mold, even if minor, means the attic environment is wrong and needs correction.

In Your Living Space

Rooms on your top floor that are consistently colder than the rest of the house in winter, or hotter in summer, indicate heat loss or gain through the ceiling. High heating and cooling bills relative to comparable homes of similar size in Calgary are another indicator. Ice dams forming at your eaves in winter mean heat is escaping through your roof and melting snow unevenly.

On Your Energy Bills

A sudden increase in heating costs that cannot be explained by rate changes or lifestyle factors often traces back to insulation deterioration, settling, or damage. If your home was built before 1990, the original insulation is likely below current Alberta Energy Code minimum requirements regardless of condition.

How Our Attic Insulation Process Works

Step 1 - Free Attic Assessment

We access your attic, measure your current R-value, inspect ventilation and air sealing, and check for moisture or damage. You receive a written summary and recommendation before we quote anything.

Step 2 - Scope and Material Review

We walk you through what we found, explain the recommended R-value target, material options, and whether any remediation work is needed before insulation goes in. You approve the scope before we schedule installation.

Step 3 - Air Sealing and Prep

On installation day, we seal all air bypasses before touching the insulation. This step is non-negotiable for a system that actually performs as designed.

Step 4 - Blown-In Installation and Final Documentation

We install blown-in insulation to the approved depth across the entire attic floor, verify consistent coverage, confirm ventilation channels remain clear, and provide written documentation of the completed R-value for your records.

Cutting Your Heating Bill Starts in Your Attic

If your home loses heat through the roof, your furnace makes up for it every single day of a Calgary winter. A properly insulated and air-sealed attic is one of the most direct investments you can make in reducing that ongoing cost.

I think there is enough photos from other reviews showing the quality of work. Personally, it's been great working with Lumina along with their direct contractors and subcontractors. Communication was very streamlined and easy. As well, questions asked through their senior estimator, Vipin, were responded generally within the hour.

Lumina also oversees the construction management very well in identifying deficiencies that is to their standards. This includes their full scope of work of roof, siding, window trim/screens, gutter/fascia, etc...

I would highly recommend them as my home is the first on the block to be fully repaired since the hail storm in 2024.

Frequently Asked Questions About Attic Insulation in Calgary

What R-value does my Calgary attic need?

Calgary homes are in Climate Zone 7 under the National Energy Code. The current Alberta Building Code minimum for attic insulation is R-50 for most residential applications. Many older Calgary homes were built to lower standards and benefit significantly from upgrades to current levels. We measure your existing R-value during the free assessment and tell you exactly where you stand.

Attic rain occurs when warm humid air from your living space migrates into the attic and condenses on the cold roof deck, forming frost that melts and drips down when temperatures rise. It looks like rain coming from your ceiling and is frequently mistaken for a roof leak. Proper insulation combined with air sealing and adequate ventilation prevents the warm air from reaching the cold surfaces in the first place.

Properly installed blown-in fiberglass insulation lasts the lifetime of the building without significant degradation if moisture is kept out. Cellulose insulation also performs well long-term in dry conditions. The main cause of premature insulation failure is moisture intrusion from attic rain, roof leaks, or plumbing issues above the attic floor.

Yes, if the existing insulation is dry, in good condition, and compatible with the new material. We assess this during the free inspection. If the existing insulation is wet, contaminated, or compressed to a point where it provides negligible R-value, we recommend full removal before installing the new system.

Yes. Ice dams form when heat escaping through an under-insulated roof melts snow at the upper sections, which then refreezes at the colder eaves and creates a dam that forces water under your shingles. Properly insulated and ventilated attics keep the entire roof deck cold in winter, eliminating the temperature differential that causes this cycle.

A Warmer Home, Lower Bills, and No More Attic Moisture Starts With One Phone Call

The attic is the part of your home that works hardest and gets the least attention. A free assessment takes less than an hour and tells you exactly what is happening up there.
